MaDaBa is a Netherlands-based ensemble formed in 2023.  Their dynamic sound seamlessly blends the depth of Middle Eastern Maqam, the freedom of jazz improvisation, and the intricacies of contemporary music. The result is a vibrant musical experience that seeks liberation in expression, inviting the listener to join them on a journey of sound and shared emotion.

MaDaBa’s collaborative spirit shines through their diverse membership. Syrian-Dutch composer, vocalist, and ud player Nawras Altaky brings his rich musical heritage, while Dutch pianist Tony Roe (Tin Men and the Telephone) provides depth and color. Turkish-Dutch musician Sjahin During (Arifa, Namibian Tales) adds pulsating percussive energy, and the evocative playing of Syrian clarinetist and duduk player Ghaeth Almaghoot evokes images of distant lands.

Inspired by the ancient “city of mosaics,” the group’s name reflects their desire to merge past and present through music. Their dynamic improvisations and carefully crafted compositions create vivid musical landscapes where tradition and innovation effortlessly converge.  Their original compositions blend mesmerizing melodies, dynamic rhythms, and captivating stories, showcasing a vibrant improvisational world where the unique talents of each member shine.

MaDaBa, also known as “The City of Mosaics,” derives its name from the Greek word “mouseion,” meaning “muse” or “inspiration.”
